Kevin Regnard was born into a family devoted to their service as knights, and as such, Kevin acted as a knight for the noble Sinclair family , under Lord Roman Sinclair, from a young age. The Sinclair family was a noble family who abhorred the newly instated Four Great Dukedoms for their unconventional diplomatic immunity granted by the state. One day, Kevin went out and spent the day with Roman's youngest daughter. When the two of them returned, Kevin found that Roman's life, as well as the lives of the rest of his family, was cut short by what was labelled as "thieves".
Kevin was overwhelmed with guilt for not being by Roman's side when he needed Kevin most. Kevin went to see his master's grave sometime later, this was when the sky broke open and a Chain approached Kevin, having come to Earth using a distortion of the Abyss to create a path, the Chain was Albus , The White Knight. Albus managed to convince Kevin to form an Illegal Contract with him in pursuit of changing the past

Every night after this, Kevin and Albus set out through Reveille , sacrificing who ever Kevin came across to Albus. In the end, 116 people had been offered to Albus, but Kevin's seal still made its full rotation, and Kevin was dragged into the depths of the Abyss alongside Albus.

Kevin arrived in the heart of the Abyss because of his existence as a Child of Ill Omen , and when he finally regained consciousness, Kevin realized that he was being inspected by a humanoid cat without eyes. The cat immediately ran off and dolls throughout the room began laughing because of Cheshire's jealousy of humans. A young girl clad in white with violet eyes quieted everyone down. Kevin asked the girls name, and she revealed that she was named 'Alice'. Albus immediately left Kevin's body and greeted Alice as the Intention of the Abyss , explaining how he'd longed to meet her. Kevin was shocked upon hearing Albus address Alice as the Intention of the Abyss. The Intention thanks Albus for bringing Kevin to her, before she clings to Albus' sword. Through this, the Intention learns about Kevin and how he had worked in a large manor, but failed to protect those whom he cared about most. Kevin angrily draws a dagger and tackles the Intention to the ground, telling her to shut up. The Intention calmly asked if that wasn't the reason why Kevin had come to see her, to save the lives of the family he served. The Intention explains that everyone who came to the Abyss was the same, desperate to get something back, however they all went mad eventually because of the company of their Chains. The Intention noted how Kevin was different, not losing himself even in the end. The Intention quoted what Kevin had said about wanting to turn back time in order to save his master, grabbing onto Kevin's dagger and cutting her hand in the process. The Intention noted how Kevin had killed so many people as she drinks her own blood, having called Kevin a fool for having done so.
Albus tackles Kevin off of the Intention and tells Kevin that he would never be able to forgive anyone for hurting the Intention of the Abyss. The Intention sits up and asks why Albus interfered while she was talking to Kevin, making Albus explode using her power. The dolls laugh and state that the Intention was angry, and that she broke dolls that were too mischievous. The Intention then danced with Cheshire in Albus' blood as it fell. Kevin questions what was going on before he's put in extreme pain. The dolls float around him and ask if it hurts, as the power of the Abyss was the strongest there, and that it would soon soak into Kevin and then he would be the same as them, as a Chain. Kevin asked how such a thing could be possible, and the Intention states that the power of the Abyss transforms humans into Chains and gives a will to things without life, also explaining that because the Abyss was linked to all flows of time, it could rule over the Chains. The Intention then quoted Glen Baskerville, saying that the Abyss was a microcosm of the world, explaining that she despised for trying to take 'that man' away from her, she also hated Gilbert and Vincent for this reason and anyone who tried to take 'that man' away from her.

The Intention remembered something and looked at Kevin, stating that she had almost forgotten to take his eyes before he turned into a Chain. The Intention sunk her fingers into Kevin's left eye socket and ripped out his left eye. Kevin cried out in pain and began writhing on the ground as the Intention said that his eye was beautiful. The dolls asked what she was going to do with Kevin's eye, and the Intention stated that she would give it to Cheshire, as that was Kevin's real purpose there. The dolls noted how they thought that was the reason why Kevin was there as the Intention didn't usually allow people into the heart of the Abyss after being dragged down into the Abyss. The Intention asked one of her dolls to keep Kevin's eyes safe for her after she licked some of the blood off of it. The Intention then states that the red eyes were perfect for Cheshire, before declaring that it was time to retrieve the other eye. Kevin remembers Roman's daughter being left all alone back on Earth, so he uses his dagger to slice through two of the dolls around him. The Intention smiled before an earthquake broke out and the Intention fell to the floor in pain as the city of Sablier was being dragged into the Abyss. The earthquake stopped and two boys covered in blood wandered into the room of the Intention of the Abyss.
The conscious child of the two, identified as Vincent by the Intention, recognized the Intention as Alice, but found it odd that she was all white. The Intention angrily asked why Vincent was there, having Cheshire attack Vincent. As the Intention spoke of how much she hated Vincent, the dolls emerged from their shelves and explained that it was Vincent who had cut out Cheshire's eyes and how he often cut up other dolls. The Intention began crying, much to Kevin's surprise. The dolls asked what was wrong, and stated that while Cheshire had no eyes, that was the reason the Intention had called Kevin there, telling the Intention to hurry up and take Kevin's right eye as well and give both eyes to Cheshire.

The Intention turned to Kevin and asked who he was. The Intention soon lost her train of thought again as she noticed the time, declaring that it was time for tea. A tea party assembled itself and Kevin could only sit and watch, dazed. Vincent noted how odd everything was and how he didn't know this Alice, questioning if this was his fault too, but Vincent soon decides that everything went mad because of Alice. The Intention then asks if Jack had still not arrived, the dolls assured her that he would come soon, and the Intention explained how Jack had promised to take her to his house just the other day, and so they would go to the forest after visiting the rose garden. Suddenly, Vincent began laughing hysterically, claiming that the Intention was a simpleton as always, explaining that Jack wouldn't be coming because he was already dead. The Intention asks Vincent why he was always so bad, claiming that he was lying, but Vincent insisted that Jack was dead and that it was all Alice's fault. Alice broke down crying, causing the room to start to break apart. Kevin noted how everything was mad, and realized that the world he had gotten himself into was mad. As Vincent is lifted out of the room and into another part of the Abyss alongside the other boy he had arrived with. Kevin stabs his dagger into the ground to stop himself from also being lifted out of the room.

Kevin stated that he would give the Intention whatever she desired, be it his eye, his leg, his arm, anything, as long as she changed the past. The Intention wasn't paying any attention to Kevin as Cheshire came to console her, though Kevin kept, trying and trying, until he finally addressed her as Alice. This got the Intention's attention, and so she ventured over to Kevin and asked if Kevin really would grant her wish, telling Kevin that she didn't want to be the Intention of the Abyss anymore and asking him to save Alice. Kevin was then lifted into the air and ejected from the Abyss.

Kevin found himself infront of a Door to the Abyss, owned by the Rainsworth family. Kevin rambled on about how he hated the Intention of the Abyss and how he was going to kill her, when he heard a young girl lead an older boy to him, stating that she'd found a man covered in blood collapsed infront of the Rainsworths' Door to the Abyss. After learning that he had been released from the Abyss years after his own time, Kevin immediately went to Sheryl Rainsworth to ask how the Sinclair family was faring as of late. Sheryl explained to Kevin that the Sinclair family had been wiped out, as Roman's eldest daughter was assassinated because the fighting between noble families had escalated. Roman's youngest daughter was so filled with despair that she became an Illegal Contractor, and sacrificed the rest of the Sinclair family to her Chain before her Incuse could complete its full revolution and she was dragged into the Abyss. Kevin felt guilty for this, although Roman and his family had lived an extra four years, Roman's youngest daughter also lost her life, something that would not have come to pass had Kevin just left well enough alone.

One day, Break sat alone by a window in the mansion, and Reim Lunettes, who had helped Sharon Rainsworth after she'd found Break, heard two other valets talking about Break. Reim saw Break scratching at his empty eye socket and so Reim ran up to Break and told him to stop, warning his that he'd hurt himself if he scratched at his eye. Break pushed Reim to the ground, telling him not to pay Break any mind, and to not so much as look at him. Shelly Rainsworth had heard this and came into the room with Sharon, putting Reim's glasses back on his face. Shelly then invited Break to spend time with herself and Sharon, and over time, Break finally opened up to Shelly and was able to smile once again.

Kevin changed his name to Xerxes Break and took it upon himself to be a servant of the Rainsworth family, asking Shelly if he could if he could try to unearth the truth of the Tragedy of Sablier, allowing him to have a reason to live. Since then, Break has devoted himself to uncovering the truth of the Tragedy of Sablier, also joining Pandora and forming a Legal Contract with the Chain, Mad Hatter , a Chain able to destroy anything relating to the power of the Abyss.

A Chain is the term given to the creatures of the Abyss. They can range from the beings that originally existed in the dimension to inanimate objects such as dolls, and even the souls of living beings, all given life or warped by the power of the Abyss. All Chains possess high regeneration capabilities and are quite durable, often withstanding copious amounts damage done by conventional weaponry, with some Chains shrugging them off all together. Many also seem to revere the Intention of the Abyss, who is herself the most powerful Chain in existence as well as the entity that governs the Abyss, and are willing to go to great lengths to meet and please her. The Baskervilles are said to be more Chain-like than human, possessing their high endurance. Chains can leave the Abyss by contracting with humans and Baskervilles, either legally or "illegally", and then escaping through a distortion (called The Way) that leads to Earth or through the Doors to the Abyss. With a few exceptions, Chains cannot exist in the real world for prolonged periods of time without a host and particularly powerful Chains may only enter through the Doors.
